About this event

Speaker Bio:

Scott Herman, CTO, BlackSky / Spaceflight Industries

Scott is driving several software development initiatives at BlackSky. He’s primarily focused on the BlackSky Global Intelligence Platform - a suite of on-demand web services for Global Monitoring that includes Satellite Imagery Management, Multi-Sensor Fusion, and Geospatial Analytics. The BlackSky platform is the public face of BlackSky's constellation of dozens of remote sensing satellites. He is also incubating a series of “next-generation” sensor processing and rapid cloud migration concepts. Scott is a passionate Agile Development, Cloud Computing, and ML/AI/Computer Vision evangelist.

Scott is deeply involved in product management, software development, quality assurance, and production operations. But at any given moment Scott is also supporting strategic planning, concept incubation, business development, community outreach & evangelism, customer service, and investment activities. What a cool job!

Scott has spent most of his career developing and deploying Imagery Analysis, Sensor Fusion, Knowledge Management, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for the U.S. Intelligence Community.

Scott works at BlackSky in Herndon, VA and can be reached at SHerman@BlackSky.com

Presentation abstract:

BlackSky is a Global Monitoring service that watches the world with its constellation of imaging satellites and supplies customers with warnings and analytics about world events that could impact their organization’s operations. With the advent of SmallSat constellations like BlackSky and the revolution in compute technologies like Machine Learning, AI, and Computer Vision, the ability to perform high-revisit Site Monitoring is emerging as a critical change in commercial remote sensing. Scott will present several real-world vignettes showing the promise of new satellite capabilities, new commercial imagery capabilities, and new geospatial analytics capabilities and how they create a new way of thinking about Global Monitoring. Elastic is a key component of the Big Data architecture that powers the BlackSky global monitoring services. Scott will explain how Elastic fits into the architecture, why BlackSky selected Elastic, lessons learned from the Elastic implementation, and where BlackSky hopes to go with further Elastic adoption in the future.
