About this event

Part I (advanced): Information Retrieval with Elasticsearch

To use elasticsearch effectively, you must understand information retrieval. This talk provides a gentle introduction to the IR field with a focus on how its concepts map to elasticsearch features. After this talk, you'll be able to answer questions like:

"Why can't I just do a regular expression search over my document content?" "Why can't I find the phrase 'to be or not to be'?" "Why was this document returned in my search results? It doesn't have that word!" "Why was this document scored higher than that document?" Speaker bio:
Alex Lambert is a co-founder and CTO of Spindle (www.spindle.com). Spindle finds the most relevant and useful social content from places nearby to help you discover what's happening right now. Previously, he was a software engineer at the Microsoft New England Research & Development Center. At Microsoft, he built the first version of Bing's social search product and developed a scalable search platform based on FAST ESP.

Part II (all levels, especially beginner): Informal chat, Q&A

This is completely open ended and informal. Come, hang out, eat some pizza and chat about anything Elasticsearch related. If you are completely new to Elasticsearch or even nosql and search altogether, this is a great opportunity to come and get some of your questions answered. We want to promote Elasticsearch adoption, so we are here to help!
