About this event

Save the date for this upcoming meetup at Mapzen! One of their engineers will speak about how Pelias, their open source geocoder, uses Elasticsearch.

Food and drink will be provided.

How Pelias uses Elasticsearch

Pelias is a modular open-source data-agnostic geocoder. It is written in node.js for modularity, streams, and ease of use. Pelias uses Elasticsearch for its full text search capabilities, autocomplete, geo capabilities, and more. Traditionally, geocoders are written on top of relational databases with geo capabilities. This is a talk will highlight how the Pelias team took Elasticsearch, a data store built for full text search, and figured out a way to use it efficiently in a geo context. Elasticsearch also supports our core belief that the best way to build locally relevant and accurate geographic search is in the open. Using this powerful, yet approachable, tool allows us to write a geocoder anyone can contribute to, build, and run themselves.

Diana Shkolnikov is the technical lead of the search team at Mapzen. She has 15+ years of software engineering experience in various industries. She and the search team at Mapzen, aka Pelias, are currently focused on the challenge of building a geocoder for the open source community by employing existing open source technologies, such as Elasticsearch and node.js.
