Elasticsearch at Palantir

Elasticsearch plays a key part in Gotham, one of Palantir's core platforms that powers a wide range of applications in areas such as law enforcement, mortgage fraud detection, and disaster response. In this talk, we'll give an overview of how Elasticsearch is used at Palantir and demo one of the latest applications, a tool that helps lawyers investigate financial wrongdoing. We'll then discuss how we made the switch to Elasticsearch from a custom solution built on Lucene and Postgres. The focus will be on one of our biggest challenges, implementing performant, fine-grained access control.

Julie Tibshirani is a backend software developer at Palantir. She has worked on Palantir's full-text search and geosearch backend, and currently works on performance for Palantir's document review and litigation product. Prior to Palantir, she attended Stanford to earn a B.S. in Math, and an M.S. in Computer Science with a focus on databases and machine learning. While at Stanford, she published in Natural Language Processing and was a teaching assistant for the graduate introduction to machine learning, one of the largest courses at the school.

Matt Gerhardt is an engineer at Palantir Technologies.  He has deployed Palantir to a variety of government agencies, supporting work ranging from human trafficking investigations to securities fraud. Most recently, Matt has managed the development of Palantir’s web-based top-down triage application for high-scale document analysis. Prior to Palantir, Matt earned a mechanical engineering degree at the University of Southern California, an MBA from the University of Maryland, and researched alternative energy technologies at Lockheed Martin.
